12 Protective Styles in 12 Months

HAPPY NEW YEAR, Beauts! I hope you are all having an amazing and optimistic start to the year. Do you have any hair goals this year? If one of your hair goals is to retain length, then protective styling is something you should consider. I have put together 12 protective style ideas for each month of the year that you can try out. These are the styles I wore through 2017 and thoroughly enjoyed.

CHRISTMAS TREE GREEN IN JANUARY

This was a synthetic wig I got from my local Beauty supply store. It cost less than $30 and I was able to wear it at different times in the year. I have finally retired it now because I mistakenly burnt the hair on a space heater (don’t ask).

CURLY KINKY HAIR IN FEBRUARY

I curled my Her Given Hair extensions with a wand curler and enjoyed these curls while they lasted. I am still enjoying this wig that I made with her given hair kinky straight wefted hair back in August 2016. Read about it here and get yourself something similar here. You will not regret every dollar spent!

COILY AFRO IN MARCH

I made these crochet braids myself and enjoyed the freedom of having them in especially during my vacation to Colombia.

SILVER FOX IN APRIL

One weekend in April, while my hair was taking a breather, I put on this silver wig to complement my outfit as a wedding guest.

MINIMALIST MAY

May was my month of taking a real break with protective styling of any sort. I had my hair in chunky twists, two cornrows, or a cornrows and bun style the whole month.

FOOL ‘EM WITH THE WIG LIFE iN JUNE

By June, it was back to my trusty Her given Hair wig. This time, I gave it a good wash and blow dried the curls out. Guys, if you cannot tell yet, this wig is probably one of the best things I own and I foresee holding on to this for a really really long time!

FAUX LOCS JULY

One of my hair clients had these done and I loved the extensions she used so I HAD to do the same style for myself. This style was crocheted into my hair using the cornrow crochet style for the back and the individual crochet style for the front.

AUGUST IN BRAIDS

Well, in a braids wig. I raised my eyebrows so much when these first made their rounds on social media but yo! I am now a believer oh. The ease, the longevity, the fierceness, and all that good stuff without investing the time, without bum numbness from sitting, and without scalp ache? Yes, please! My mum had this one made for me in her favorite colour, purple. I am in the market for a black one though, so if you know anyone that sells these in Lagos, please hook me up!

FRO LOVE, SELF LOVE SEPTEMBER

September is my birthday month and over the years, it turns out it is the month I am very deliberate about self love and self appreciation. Other times, I’m just constantly introspecting and reevaluating my life. September is when I allow myself to let her hair down and just glow! That’s how I felt in these crochet braids that I did for myself the night before my birthday trip. At first, I thought, whoa – I have to trim this down but by the next morning, I was in love with the volume!

OCTOBER BRINGS THE BEST OF BOTH WORLDS

I used the same hair extensions from September to create this look. Cornrows in the front and crochet in the back.

RED IN NOVEMBER

Early in November, my co-worker asked if I had ever worn red hair. “Like Rihanna Red” she said. I keep telling her that she unleashed the dragon with that question because by the next week, I was experimenting with red colour, starting with these extensions. This is the same hair as the September and October hair – just in red. I was sold and then December happened.

ONCE YOU GO RED IN DECEMBER

You may never go back! I dyed all the hair on my actual head RED! So right now, I am a red head and loving it! Who knows when I will tire of this look but for now, red is my couleur du jour.

There you have it. I hope you see something that piques your interest to try out in 2018. One thing I love about protective styling is the excitement that comes with it. Because it is temporary, you can literally do anything you please and not have to worry and consider consequences. And coupled with the advantage of length retention? I say, yes, yes, yes to protective styling once in a while!

So, tell me? What is your go-to protective style and what are your hair goals for 2018?

  1. You ought to have been a redhead from birth. It complements your skin tone sooo well.

I can’t even remember what 2017 was like for my hair. All I know is the last quarter had me installing yarn braids – 20 or so braids- by myself. Man, was I tired!

Currently sef, I have manipulated my hair from large twists to twistouts, to low bun, then mini twists for over a month. Without a single wash day. I am still tired.

    Happy New Year MeeMee

    1. Thank you so much! Go you for your DIY yarn braids! I feel you on how long those take. You should probably hide that hair in a protective style so that when you take it out, you would have missed it enough to give it some TLC.
